The European Banking Federation, together with its members in more than 20 European countries, organised the first-ever European Money Week from Monday 9th to Friday 13th March. This week which has been dedicated to financial education across Europe has seen a wide range of events designed to boost public awareness on financial literacy and financial education for young people. The programme ‘Money Matters’, offered at HESC within the Department of Curriculum Management exposed ten to eleven-year old pupils to various hands-on experiences leading to debate, reflection, analysis and evaluation whilst equipping them with appropriate skills, competences and attitudes to make justified informed financial decisions. A life-sized mascot named ‘Flusinu’ and an educational song accompanying the mascot were created for this programme.

The European Money Week was held between Monday 14th and Friday 18th March. A number of activities were organised by the Malta Bankers’ Association in collaboration with the Home Economics Seminar Centre within the Department of Curriculum Management, Ministry of Education and Employment, the Malta Financial Services Authority, the Central Bank of Malta, the Malta Stock Exchange, and the Institute of Financial Services. The programme ‘Be Wise Pay Smart’ targeted fifteen to sixteen-year old students who are undergoing the Core Curriculum Programme (CCP) and the Alternative Learning Programme (ALP). Students visited a bank branch throughout the week for a 90 minutes practical session. The visit included a filmed sketch which was written, directed and acted out by HESC. The latter aimed at provoking discussion / questions regarding the use of ATMs and EPOS terminals, the different types of bank accounts and the use of debit and credit cards. This was followed by hands-on training, carrying out ATM and card transactions. Sessions were facilitated by teachers from the Home Economics Seminar Centre and bank personnel.
